Implementing the NIST AI Risk Management Framework

A practical walkthrough of the NIST AI RMF, from mapping and measuring to managing AI risks across the lifecycle.

Implementing the NIST AI Risk Management Framework

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework (RMF) provides a voluntary but highly influential structure for managing the risks associated with artificial intelligence. Unlike prescriptive regulations, the NIST AI RMF is designed to be adaptable and to equip organizations with a process for thinking about, communicating, and handling AI risks.

The Core Functions of the NIST AI RMF

The framework is organized around four core functions:

  • Govern: This is the foundational function. It's about establishing a culture of risk management. It involves creating policies, assigning roles and responsibilities, and ensuring that processes are in place to manage AI risks across the organization.
  • Map: This function is about understanding the context. You identify the specific AI systems in use, their capabilities, their intended applications, and the potential risks they pose to individuals and the organization.
  • Measure: Here, you analyze and track the identified risks. This involves using quantitative and qualitative methods to assess the likelihood and impact of potential harms, such as bias, lack of explainability, or security vulnerabilities.
  • Manage: This is the action-oriented function. Based on the mapping and measurement, you treat the identified risks. This could involve mitigating the risk (e.g., by retraining a model with more diverse data), transferring it (e.g., through insurance), or deciding to avoid it altogether by not deploying the system.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Adopting the NIST AI RMF is a powerful way to demonstrate due diligence and build trust with customers and regulators. It provides a structured, repeatable process for responsible AI innovation, moving your organization from ad-hoc checks to a systematic and evidence-based approach to AI governance.
